ELL MISSION STATEMENT
The Palos Heights Public Schools, District 128 provides English
Language Learners (ELL's) with a program of English language instruction, including content-based language instruction, and supports cultural adjustments so that ELL students become proficient in English and meet the same challenging academic content standards that all students are expected to meet.

WHAT IS ELL?
English Language Learning is English language support and instruction by teachers trained in recognizing and working with language learners.
What is an ELL Program?
- An ELL program teaches language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies vocabulary and concepts using strategies and methodologies appropriate for second language acquisition.
- An ELL program provides intensive instruction in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and comprehending the English Language.
- An ELL program uses the academic and cultural experience of the student as a platform to provide appropriate instruction in English.
How is an ELL program implemented?
- Pull-out Support: small groups are pulled out of the classroom for specialized language instruction.
- Push-in Support: students are supported in the classroom for language instruction.
How does my child qualify or who can be enrolled in an ELL program?
- Students who speak or hear a language other than English will be identified through the district home language survey.
- Eligible students will be assessed to determine their appropriate English Language Proficiency (ELP) level using English language screeners.
- District 128 Palos Heights has adopted the World Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) Consortium's English language proficiency standards.
- Parent approval is required to participate in the program.
How will my child benefit from ELL services?
- Your child will develop proficiency and competence in the English language.
- Supports student and prepares them to be successful in academic subjects.
- Provides instruction that builds on students' cognitive abilities and prior education that will enable students to achieve high standards.
- Provides instruction for ELL students in the most appropriate setting according to students' needs.
- Provides explicit instruction that fosters academic growth and success within the general education environment.
- Provides ongoing consistent wide assessment of students reflecting stages of English language acquisition.
- Share and create awareness of understanding diverse cultures.
